Fairness for Children Raised by Relatives (F4CRR) teamed up with UBC’s Centre for the Study of Services to Children and Families (CSSCF) to host a webinar on October 30, 2025 called Reimagining Family Support Services: Perspectives from Kinship Caregivers.
This presentation highlighted key findings from the collaborative research project with University of British Columbia. This event provided valuable insights and foster discussion among caregivers, practitioners, and policymakers. Titled Reimagining Family Support Services: Perspectives from Kinship Caregivers, the presentation explores supporting families raising children within kinship care from the lived experience of the kinship caregivers.
Led by Dr. Barbara Lee, Choi Shan Ng, and Kyle Turone, the project brought together stories from over 30 kinship caregivers who shared their challenges, insights, and ideas for change. (the slide-deck is available here)
Some interesting take-aways
After sharing some challenges around gathering statistics, and outlining the research and datacollections methodology, the report presented a comprehensive outline of what caregivers identified as what’s working — and what isn’t. Watch the recording and see what was said, loud and clear!
Kinship caregivers are keeping children connected to family, culture, and community, often at great personal cost. Yet the systems designed to help families weren’t built with them in mind.
An interesting question and answer discussion followed. Including insight on some of the upcoming research and relevant initiatives!
As one caregiver said: “We’re not asking for special treatment, we’re asking for fairness.”
