Held in Campbell River on June 7–8, 2025, Community Empowerment through Harmony brought together over 30 kinship caregivers (grandparents, aunties, uncles, and others raising relative children) for a weekend of deep connection, learning, and care.
Hosted by Fairness for Children Raised by Relatives, the gathering offered space to share stories, build relationships, and strengthen our collective voice.
The weekend opened with a warm welcome and prayers from Elder Lavern Henderson, and the brushing ceremonies led by community Elders throughout the two days set a tone of care, healing, and belonging.

Like previous years, the central feature of the gathering was our sharing circle, where caregivers spoke from the heart about their experiences, challenges, and joys. These poignant and powerful conversations reminded us: we are not alone, and our stories carry strength.
Saturday afternoon’s workshop, “Grief and Love” with Maggie Puglas, explored the seven languages of grief. And, guided by Mandy Dixon, almost everyone let their creativity flow making their own talking sticks. Then, together, we enjoyed a delicious chicken and rib dinner. We were thrilled to have a few kinship children join us for meals… a reminder of why we do this work.
Sunday morning started with a hearty full breakfast and then presentations on free resources by Parent Support Services, the Belonging Network, Caring Families Society, and an FASD Keyworker. Later we dove deep into “What we wish we knew”: Reimagining Training for Kinship Families and Social Workers at a World Café led by Dr. Barbara Lee, Assistant Professor, School of Social Work, UBC, and her team of students. Participants were invited to reimagine what culturally grounded, practical training could look like for both kinship families and social workers.
The afternoon was wrapped up with an active discussion led by Catherine Talbott, Executive Director at Ministry of Children and Family Development – Strategic Initiatives, as cargivers were able to provide meaningful input and insight.
We are ever so grateful for all who attended, from neighbouring communities or traveling from all across the province… everyone brought powerful energy and shared life experiences which make incredible contributions and impact on all who attend. We are thankful to New Horizons for their grant support, BCGEU for their contributions (and handy pens and pads!), and to the donors and volunteers who helped make it all happen.
Together, we created a space of trust, hope, and shared purpose. Because when kinship families come together, we are stronger.
